Being veteran friendly means our team understands the unique health needs that may affect people who have served in the UK Armed Forces. By identifying veterans within our patient population, we can help ensure that former service personnel receive appropriate care, support and access to specialist services where needed.

Are You A Veteran?

A veteran is anyone who has served for at least one day in the UK Armed Forces, whether as a Regular or Reservist.

If you have served in the Armed Forces, please let us know by informing a member of our reception team or updating your details with the practice. Recording your veteran status on your medical record can help us provide the most appropriate care and support.

How Being Identified As A Veteran Can Help

By telling us that you have served in the Armed Forces, you may benefit from:

• Better understanding of your health needs by practice staff.
• Signposting to dedicated NHS and charitable support services for veterans.
• Access to specialist services for physical and mental health conditions related to military service.
• Appropriate referral pathways for veterans who require additional support.
• Help accessing local and national organisations that provide advice, welfare support and practical assistance.

Priority Treatment For Service-Related Conditions

Under the Armed Forces Covenant, veterans may be entitled to priority treatment within NHS secondary care for conditions that are attributable to their service, subject to clinical need.

It is therefore important that your GP record accurately reflects your veteran status.

Support Available To Veterans

A range of organisations offer support to veterans and their families, including:

• Op COURAGE
• Veterans UK
• SSAFA
• The Royal British Legion
• Help for Heroes
• Combat Stress

These organisations can provide support with physical and mental health, employment, housing, finances, welfare benefits and social wellbeing.
